Quilters Create Fabric Postcards for Troops
Quilters from around the country are filling the mailbox of How-to-Quilt.com with fabric postcard greetings for soldiers in Iraq.
Remembering what Memorial Day and the 4th of July are all about, quilters have dropped everything to create tiny quilts. These pocket-size greetings, made from bits and pieces of fabric, will be sent to Marines in the remote parts of Iraq to let them know that people here in the States are thinking about them and praying for their safe return.
Target date for arrival: the 4th of July 2006.
\"Quilters have a history of sending quilts to soldiers,\" observed Penny Halgren, initiator of Penny\'s Postcard Posse. \"Generally, though, quilts go to wounded soldiers and the families of fallen soldiers. We wanted to do something special for the soldiers who are out there still fighting the fight for freedom. Full size quilts didn\'t seem too practical, so we decided to make tiny quilts that the soldiers could carry with them.\"
Quilters began this project on Memorial Day, and plan to collect more than 230 fabric postcards by the middle of June, one quilt representing each year since the Declaration of Independence. That\'s a short three weeks, and quilters are up to it. The day following the commencement of the program, two quilters sent pictures of their fabric postcards, and a brief three days later, fabric postcards began arriving in the mail. The mid-June deadline allows time for transport to Iraq and distribution to the troops around the 4th of July.
\"Quilters are amazing,\" Halgren continued. \"And quite responsive. I suspected that many would enjoy participating in this project, since it was something that anybody could do, and a tiny fabric postcard could be completed in less than 2 hours. I was shocked when I opened my email a day after announcing the Postcard Posse and found pictures of completed postcards in my Inbox.\"
How-to-Quilt.com has created two patterns for fabric postcards - one is a United States flag, the other is a traditional quilt block design called Pinwheel - and is giving the patterns away free on the site. Quilters can use either of these patterns or choose their own. The patterns and all of the details are posted at http://www.how-to-quilt.com. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the US flag. Click on the link, and you\'re there.
Penny\'s Postcard Posse gives quilters an opportunity to take bits and pieces of fabric and transform them into a message of love for someone 7000 miles away who may be wondering whether anyone cares. Many quilters have included their name and address with their message, possibly hoping to establish ongoing communications with a soldier so far away from home.
